Early this week I was asked by a friend's wife "What type of woodworking tool should I buy my husband for his birthday?"

After a minute's thought I decided to tell her: "Don't buy him anything. He probably already has it or is wishing for something else. I believe there are two options.

1. Buy him a gift card from his favorite woodworking store. But if you are like my wife, she has no idea where that store is located.

2. I think the best and most appreciated way to do this would be to tell him what you want to do and go with him to shop for his gift. Be patient. After all, how many hours has he spent walking through the mall while you shop. Your participation will make him feel good and you might find you enjoy the time together. Be prepared to write the check. Don't make him do it.
